Overview

The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is an international NGO specializing in Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA). Founded in 1991, MAG has conducted landmine clearance, explosive ordnance disposal, and related operations in over 10 countries. It currently implements HMA projects in Angola, Cambodia, Chad, Cyprus, DR Congo, Lao PDR, Vietnam, northern Iraq, Sudan, Sri Lanka, and Lebanon. All of MAG’s projects emphasize the development of a local capacity to implement and manage HMA. MAG’s country programmes aim for local ownership of all functions as national staff capacity develops to meet recognized standards. MAG works to help people rebuild their lives after war by integrating Humanitarian Mine Action with other development activities and responding to the real needs of affected communities. A world where people can build peaceful and prosperous futures free from the impact of the remnants of conflict. To build the futures of people affected by the remnants of conflict through responsive, quality-driven and progressive action. We remove the physical threat of injury and death and alleviate economic devastation. We provide clearance and education enabling an escape from the poverty and suffering caused by conflict.

Background

MAG started its operation in Cambodia in October 1992, deploying one mine clearance team in Battambang province. Today the organization operates 22 Mine Action Teams, 7 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Teams, 9 Mechanical Teams (including 9 Cambodian made Tempest vegetation cutters and one Bozena 4 Mine Clearance System) and 9 Community Liaison Teams, working in Battambang, Pailin, Pursat, Kompong Thom, Preah Vihear and Kampong Cham. MAG employs both male and female, able-bodied and amputee technical staff, contributing to a total of about 500 employees. Thirty three percent of MAG deminers are female, often widowed by the devices they now destroy. Amputees make up 6% of MAG employees. MAG Cambodia was the first demining agency globally to deploy all female teams.
