Overview

The Asia Foundation is a private, nongovernmental American grant-making organization that was established in 1954. The Foundation is dedicated to supporting programs that contribute to a peaceful, prosperous, and open Asia Pacific community. Drawing on more than four decades of experience in Asia, the Foundation collaborates with partners from the public and private sectors in the region to support, through grants and other programs, the development of institutions, leadership, and policy in four broad program areas: governance, law, and civil society; economic reform and development; women's political participation; and international relations. With a network of 17 offices throughout Asia, an office in Washington, D.C., and headquarters in San Francisco, the Foundation funds programs in these areas at both a country and regional level. The Asia Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental organization committed to the development of a peaceful, prosperous, just and open Asia-Pacific region. The Asia Foundation supports local non-government organizations to push for progress in governance, human rights and economic reform. The Asia Foundation also supports program to increase the participation of women and the level of attention of gender issues in the political process.

Background

The Asia Foundation first opened an office in Phnom Penh in 1955 and developed programs in the country until 1966. Administered out of the Foundation's Thailand office, the Cambodia program resumed in 1989, and in the spring of 1993, a Phnom Penh office was re-established. In the 1990s, the Foundation's emphasis has been on support for the reform of the legal system and the development of democratic processes and institutions. Current programs in Cambodia focus on the role of public interest non-governmental organizations working in the field of human rights and elections. A priority emphasis is placed on women's political and economic empowerment, good governance, public policy, and media. Since 1955, the Foundation's Books for Asia program has distributed thousands of English-language books and journals throughout the country.
