Overview

The current MCC Cambodia Partnership program evolved out of the realization that there are now many organizations in Cambodia that are capable of developing and managing their own activities. MCC noted however, that many good and potentially strong local initiatives, particularly young organizations, need support and encouragement. MCC supports Cambodian initiatives rather than continuing direct implementation of development work. The partners are selected from the sectors of sustainable Livelihood, Peace, and Education. MCC advisors assist seventeen local organizations working with national directors and staff on activities that include language skills (editing), networking, communications, fundraising, analysis, monitoring, evaluation, strategic planning, and development of financial and managerial systems. The advisors assist and mentor local leaders to develop and enhance their skills in their walk towards a peaceful and sustainable development of Cambodia. The ultimate objective is to develop strong autonomous partners with competence and confidence as empowered agents of change for Cambodia

Background

MCC began work in Cambodia in 1979 by sending relief aid in collaboration with other international organizations. Until 1992 MCC assistance to Cambodia was characterized by relief and rehabilitation projects and the provision of funds. As opportunities opened for more conventional community development projects, MCC began to place volunteers in rural settings. Since 2000 MCC has focused more on partnering with local Cambodian organizations and some government institutions. Current sectors in which MCC has partnerships are: agriculture and food security, community integrated development, education, income generation, irrigation projects, returnee integration, and peace building through advocacy and mediation. MCC places emphasis on working together with location organizations to strengthen their organizational capacity to meet their objectives.
