Overview

Room to Read's mission is to provide under-privileged children with an opportunity to gain the lifelong gift of education. The organization was founded on the belief that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and taking control of one’s own life. We currently work in Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Zambia and Bangladesh – countries with a desperate lack of resources to educate their children. Room to Read is a results-driven organization that seeks to intervene early in a child's life to provide ongoing educational opportunities in their communities. We are non-governmental, non-religious and work with local NGOs and community based organizations through partnering with Government Schools to implement our programs.

Background

Room to Read Cambodia was founded on December 2, 2002 and got registered with the Royal Government of Cambodia to operate its programs in the Kingdom of Cambodia. Room to Read had been operating in Nepal and Vietnam, and felt its proven approach to improving educational infrastructure in rural communities would fit well in the Cambodian context. Four months before Room to Read was established in Cambodia, a team arrived to explore networking opportunities and suitable options for Room to Read's expansion. Soon after their study and research visit, Room to Read Cambodia was officially established and started its activities with the Asia Foundation, our first partner in Cambodia. During its first year, the team launched the Reading Room program and the Computer Room program. Since then, our work in Cambodia has grown and we implement all of Room to Read's core programs. Room to Read has built a hardworking and passionate team in Cambodia. We launched our Reading Room Program and our Computer Room Program in our first year. Since then, our work has grown to encompass all of Room to Read’s key program areas—Reading Room, School Room, Local Language, Computer and Language Room, and Girl’s Education Programs—and has been operating in 12 regional presences across the country.

Mission

We partner with local communities throughout the developing world to provide quality educational opportunities by establishing libraries, creating local language children's literature, constructing schools, providing education to girls and establishing computer labs. We seek to intervene early in the lives of children in the belief that education empowers people to improve socioeconomic conditions for their families, communities, countries and future generations. Through the opportunities that only education can provide, we strive to break the cycle of poverty, one child at a time.

Vision

Room to Read will help ten million children in the develpping world gain the lifelong gift of education by year 2020.
