Overview
Angkor Buddhist Organization (ABO) has been providing education and support to four villages within the Kandeak commune for 10+ years. The school has recently relocated to Sla Kram to provide the same model of education across eight villages in this area. Over the last 10 years students have completed their schooling with ABO and gone on to higher education and subsequently secured full-time employment in the following positions to name but a few): Teaching, Marketing, Tourism, Hospitality, Accountant, and Small Business Owners. With the income from positions such as mentioned above, students have been able to support their entire families and their family farming industries. We have witnessed economic growth and development in the communities we provide education and support for. Families have stayed together where previously they would have been required to separate for long periods of time and distances to source work and income. We have also seen a reduction in students being lured by "fast money" into positions of potential abuse and breach of human rights. And most importantly we have witnessed community development being undertaken by the community members themselves as opposed to community development occurring through external aid organizations. This builds resilience in the community and hope grows in a resilient community.
Background
Angkor Buddhist Organization (ABO) was established in 2011 by Venerable Kroch Bopha, Venerable Sayoeun, other monks and friends of Wat Polangka temple in Siem Reap. Bopha and Sayoeun have since laid aside their robes of 17 years to be of greater service to the school and community ABO is a government licensed NGO, providing education and community development for the children of Kokthlok village, Kandek commune, 7 km from Siem Reap. It receives no government support and relies solely on donations and the work of volunteers. We are committed to resolving the cycle of poverty by providing access to education for one of the poorer and vulnerable communities in Cambodia . The focus is on the children and disadvantaged students.
