APOPO is a non-profit organization trains African Giant Pouched Rats to detect Landmines and Tuberculosis using their amazing sense of smell. Founded in 1997, APOPO operates today in 7 countries.

Project Summary

APOPO operates in Cambodia from 2012 in parthership with CMAC. In 2015 the first mine detection rats arrived to Cambodia and the teams are operating in the Provinces of Siem Reap, Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear. The mine detection rats have cleared 3.7 million square meters in Cambodia, locating over 1,200 landmines and UXO's, as of July 2019. In addition, APOPO has a dog program in Kampong Chhnang, training high quality search dogs for area investigation, named the SMART dogs.
